What is the Rainbow Book Fair?

The Rainbow Book Fair is the largest LGBTQ+ book event in the US. It is totally unique—there is no other book fair quite like it. At the RBF, the people who write, read, publish, and sell our books are taken seriously, but with a lot of queer humor and love thrown in.

We’re back, and we can't wait to see our readers, writers, and especially our wonderful exhibitors, who come from all over the country and places like London and Berlin to show their books to an enthusiastic audience of queer book lovers.

Our books run the entire span of LGBTQ+ literature, from scholarly and serious to campy and zany, from books for young readers to “adult” books (and we are sure you know what they are!) The important thing is that if you read and love LGBT+ writing, we want you here on

April 20, 2024, at the LGBT Center, 208 West 13th Street, in Greenwich Village, New York, NY, from noon until 6 p.m.

The book fair is always a highlight of my year. Hell, everything started for me at the Rainbow Book Fair.

@ 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Join the Bureau for a conversation with authors I. Augustus Durham and Brittnay L. Proctor to discuss Durham’s new book, Stay Black and Die: On Melancholy and Genius (Duke University Press, 2023). Examining the works of Frederick Douglass, Ralph Ellison, Marvin Gaye, Octavia E. Butler, and Kendrick Lamar, Stay Black and Die chronicles the relationship between black “mothers” and “sons” to argue for the black feminine/maternal, through the lens of abstraction, as the site of melancholy and genius.

The Rainbow Book Fair is back! For our 12th Fair, the theme is “Count Us In!”  We’ll be facing crucial Presidential and Congressional elections in 2024, and too often LGBT people have been counted out as a political and cultural force. This year, we’re saying Count Us In! As usual, we’ll be spotlighting major queer writers as our Featured Readers, as well as panels that address the crucial issues that we’re dealing with. From  LGBT politics to queer literature for kids and young adults to radical performance art, we’ll be facing some hot-button issues head-on!

AND… don’t forget our annual Drag Story Hour, a celebration of gender fabulousness for children of all ages.

PLUS, we’ll be hosting the Come Hear! poetry marathon and a wide roster of short readings in every genre.
